Landslide Kills 10 In
Colombia
At least 10 people of
the same family were
killed early Tuesday in
northeastern Colombia as
their house collapsed in
a landslide triggered by
heavy rains, local
authorities said.
Giovanni Ortiz, mayor of
the municipality of
Acari, expressed his
regret over the death of
the members of the
family that moved to the
house after being
displaced by violence in
Colombia years ago.
Ortiz said the staff of
the national disaster
office would fly to the
affected region to
evaluate the damage and
to aid the villagers due
to the bad conditions of
roads linking to the
region.
From January to June 11,
the rains in Colombia
have left 83 dead, 171
injured, 11 missing, and
some 336,000 homeless,
according to the
national disaster
office.
The meteorological
authorities said this
rainy season in Colombia
was the worst in
decades, and aid and
emergency units will
remain on alert in the
region.
