Guatemala's Colom to
Central American Summits
Guatemalan President
Alvaro Colom will go to
El Salvador and Mexico
this week to participate
in the Summits of the
Central American
Integration System (SICA)
and the Mechanism of
Tuxtla.
During the meeting in
San Salvador, this
country will grant
Honduras the SICA pro
tempore presidency and
an agreement for the
adhesion of Chile and
Germany as observers in
the sub-regional
organizations will be
signed.
Topics like trade, the
course of the
integration process and
the food crisis in
Central American
countries are on the
agenda.
Also, there will be
discussion of the
controversial
association agreement
with the European Union,
at a moment of strong
tension because of the
EU's strong measures
against immmigrants.
After the meeting
participants will go to
the Mexican city of
Villahermosa, capital of
the state of Tabasco, to
take part in the 10th
Summit of the Mechanism
of Tuxtla, between the
SICA Presidents and
Mexican President Felipe
Calderon.
Calderon will propose
his colleagues the
relaunching of the
Puebla Panama Plan,
rejected by extensive
social sectors in this
region because of the
damage it may cause to
the environment and
indigenous communities.
