Owners Of Passenger
Vehicles Running On
Diesel To Pay Double
Property Tax
Last week the government
gave owners of diesel
passenger vehicles a
break by subsidizing the
¢85 colones increase of
diesel fuel. However,
now it pretends to
double the property tax
on some 66.000 passenger
vehicles using diesel.
The increased tax does
not apply to all public
transport and commercial
vehicles using diesel.
The ministro de
Hacienda, Guillermo
Zúñiga, said yesterday
that the increase is
included in the proposed
law that would eliminate
the unit tax on diesel
fuel, adding that owners
of diesel powered
vehicles are benefiting
as owners of gasoline
vehicles pay more for
fuel.
Last Friday the
government decided to
subsidize the ¢85
colones increase
requested by the
national refinery and is
currently working on
transferring some ¢10
billion colones to
Recope to offset the
loss in revenue from the
subsidy.
The tax increase is one
of the measures that the
government hinted to in
its announcement on June
12 to face the increase
use of fuel and high
cost to the country to
import as it faces
record prices for crude
oil on international
markets.
The viceministra de
Hacienda, Jenny
Phillips, confirmed that
there currently are
66.000 private passenger
vehicles that will be
affected by the
increased property tax,
which will generate ¢17
billion colones in
revenue for the
government. Phillips
explained that the
increase will only be
applied if the proposal
is approved by the
legislators.
Zúñiga added that the
proposal is ready and is
expected to be presented
to the Legislature soon
and approved within a
month.
