A brawl between taxi drivers and piratas (pirate taxis) that required the intervention of the Fuerza Pública (police), the Policía Turística (Toursit police) and the Policía Tránsito (traffic police), in downtown Limón yesterday.

The brawl resulted when transport officials marked the area used by the piratas as an official taxi stand. The piratas upset at the decision, began a heated argument with taxi drivers using the stand, that escalated to physical violence.

The piratas claim that the move is deny them their right to make a living, taking away food from ther mouths of their children and without the ability to work, forcing them to become delinquents, according to George Salas, a pirate taxi drivers who spoke to the media.

The argument and ensuing violence began when a taxi driver picked up a fare at the new taxi stand in front of the Cascada de Oro retail store and one of the pirates blocked the taxi from leaving with the fare.
