Two Police Officers On
Trial Tomorrow For Canda
Attack
Officers of the Fuerza
Pública have been
receiving training on
how to control vicious
dogs to avoid the
incident that resulted
in mortal attack of
Natividad Canda by two
dogs, a case where the
trial of two police
officers begins
tomorrow.
Canda, a Nicaraguan
national, alleged to
have entered a private
property in Cartago with
the intention of
robbery, was attacked by
two Rottweilers while
police are accused of
standing by and doing
nothing to stop the
attack.
Officers Erick Sánchez
Torres and Asdrúbal Luna
Zamora are being accused
of voluntary
manslaughter.
The Ministerio Público
maintains that the
officers took a passive
position in the face of
the attack that lasted
for several hours and
resulting in the death
of the Canda.
Defending a civil suit
in the case are also
three other police
officers and the owner
and the tenant of the
lot where the attack
occurred. The civil
action was filed by
Canda's mother who is
seeking civil damages in
the amount of ¢95
million colones.
Canda's family mantain
that the death of
Natividad could have
been avoided if police
acted properly, accusing
the officials on the
scene as acting with
prejudice in not
stopping the attack
which occurred in
November 2005.
