School Break Is Time For Vacation For Many
Tomorrow, Monday, is the start of the mid year school vacations as more than a million students leave the classrooms behind for two weeks. However, so do the parents, in many cases.

A number of public institutions like the Poder Judicial will be closed for the entire week. Notwithstanding the closure, offices dealing with domestic and juvenile violence and the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) and the Medicina Forense (morgue) will all be open, though with limited staff.

Most of the offices of the Ministerio Público will also be open with a small staff to deal with fines, child support and similar cases.

While the courts will be closed for the week, the Sala Constitucional office will be open to receive documents - appeals, etc - on a 24 hour basis with one judge and an assistant on call.

As to the private sector, some businesses close down entire for a week or two to spend time with their families, including some retails shops.

For doctor, dentists, lawyers and other professionals it is best to call ahead, including to confirm an appointment.

The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) is on full alert to attend emergencies during the holidays and the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) will be out in full force for the first days and the last days of vacation, to control traffic and drinking and driving.
