Honduran Kicks against US Meddling
Former director of the Honduran Company of Telecommunications (Hondutel), Marcelo Chimirri, denounced United States intrusion in internal affairs of his country.

Chimirri challenged the decision of the US government to revoke his entry permission after claiming he participated in actions of corruption.

"It is an arbitrary measure intending to bend the arms of Honduran public officials to accept Washington pressure," explained the former director of Hondutel.

He commented that the United States politically tackled him in the midst of his candidacy for the capital mayoralty by the Ahora Si movement.

Referring to the note from the US embassy, he regretted that officials of another government in Honduras interfere in internal political issues and are involved in shady dealings.

The case of Marcelo Chimirri hit the headlines after a raid of his house last December on orders of the Attorney General, an action that was repudiated by Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya.

An assault team was used, but this kind of action with grenade launchers and bayonets is only used against organized crime, Zelaya commented.

Chimirri blamed the scandalous action on powerful economic groups harmed by Hondutel measures in favor of the population.
