47.000 Vehicles Still Circulating Without Marchamo
47.783 owners of vehicles have yet to pay their 2008 Marchamo and face a fine of ˘13.000 colones and confiscation of the license plates, according to Tránsito officials.

The Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) - state monopoly on insurance - confirmed that as of yesterday 733.335 marchamos had been paid for a total of ˘74.735 billion colones.

The INS list includes 889.656 vehicles that are required to pay the annual circulation permit, but expects only 781.118 to actually be paid. The rest of the vehicles that are subject to payment are those not in use and have yet to taken off the registry books by their owners.

The annual marchamo is due and payable by December 31st of each year on every vehicle on the Registro Nacional registry, regardless if the vehicle is in use or not.

Owners of vehicles who are not in use, for example, damaged in a collission, should cancel the registration with the national registry and avoid owing the annual fees if they ever intent to repair the vehicle.

To obtain the marchamo the vehicle must have its annual inspection - Riteve - current.
