Palmares Expects 100.000 Visitors For Tonight's Carnaval
Palmares expects some 100.000 people today as the annual festival holds its "carnaval" beginning at 6:00pm tonight.

According to William Vásquez, president of the Asociación Cívica Palmareña, this year more people have attended the festival than in the past 21 years.

Mascaradas, comparzas, zanquros and carrozas are all part of the parade that will end with a fireworks display.

According to Vásquez more than 600 members of the Fuerza Pública (police) will be on hand to keep an eye on partygoers, in addition to the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) who will ensure that drunk drivers walk home.

The Palmares festival ends Sunday with a number of "international" concerts that are free to visitors, starting at noon with the Mexican bank Moderatto, followed by the Argentine group Enanitos Verdes.

Safety is main issue and that is why organizers have been constantly checking the temporary structures along with the Ministerio de Salud (health officials) and the Bomberos after one of the the floors collapsed in the "Imagine" booth.
