Multiplaza Bans Smoking
The fight against smokers has hit the malls, as the Centro Comercial Multiplaza in Escazú and Zapote, this week is beginning a ban on all cigarette smoking inside its installations.

Smoking within the mall will be completely prohibited and security personnel will be there to ensure that smokers butt out.

The mall administration said it took the decision in consideration of all the non-smokers who frequent the mall.

For those who prefer a cigarette with their meal or coffee, Multiplaza will not be the place, according to Elisa Rojas, marketing manager for Grupo Roble, owners of the mall.

"Maintenance staff, security personnel and stores in the mall will be informing the public on the measure", said Rojas.

Rojas added that the health consideration of children and the environment were also considered in taking the controversial action on the ban on smoking.

"The public will welcome the decision as the majority of visitors do not smoke", said Rojas, who added that a number of major malls in Latin America have already banned smoking.

The initiative to ban smoking has the support of the Instituto de Farmacodependencia y Alcoholismo (Iafa) in Costa Rica.
