Government Promises
Electric Train in Two
Years
The Brazilian company
Engevix has been hired
to carry out a
feasibility study for
the introduction of an
electric train in San
José, which the
government promises to
adjudicate a concession
within 2 or 3 years.
At least that is the
promise by the
viceministro de
Concesión de Obra
Pública, Luis Diego
Vargas, after signing a
contract the us$1.2
million dollar contract
with Engecix.
Engevix will have one
year to determine the
conditions for the
viability of
construction of an
electric train that
would move people
between Heredia and the
Pacifico train station
in San José.
The electric train would
also run between Pavas
and San Pedro and will
ultimately provide
service to Cartago and
Alajuela, to be offered
in phases.
The Brazilian company
will also have the
responsibility to
prepare the bidding
documentation for the
government to offer the
concession. The bid will
be open to international
as well as national
companies.
The cost of the
investment could reach
us$90 million dollars
for the first phase that
can carry between 200
and 300 people providing
service within 10 to 15
minutes in both
directions.
Accoriding to the
ministra de Obras
Públicas y Transportes,
Karla González, the
success of the project
will depend on the
interest of the banks to
finance the project.
Vargas added that the
project will not take 30
years like the
construction of the road
between Caldera and San
José.
