Begins At Noon Today
The Palmares festival is
in full swing today as
tens of thousdands are
expected to flock to the
small town northwest of
San José during the next
twelve days.
At noon today the
traditional TOPE - horse
parade - with the best
horses in the country
will take over the main
street of Palmares,
followed later today by
the running of the
bulls. And of course, is
is the tradition,
alcohol will play an
important role in the
festivities.
To ensure public safety
on the fair grounds the
Fuerza Pública will be
on hand, and on the
roads leading into and
out of Palmares, more
than 150 Tránsito
(traffic) officials are
there to ensure a safe
and alcohol free ride
home.
Tránsito officials will
be posted as far away as
the San José airport
with spot checks,
breathalyzer tests, two
trucks and a screwdriver
in hand to remove
license plates from
vehicles of drivers
under the influence.
Germán Marín, director
of the Policía de
Tránsito, assures a zero
tolerance policy.
Tránsito will also be
diverting traffic to
ease congestion in areas
like the Cruce de
Cambronero, the area
around Mall
Internacional and the
airport.
Last year Tránsito
officials confiscated 60
vehicles of drunk
drivers during the
festival.
