San José - Calera Road
Construction Begins
Today
After thirty years in
the planning and
construction and
stalling, work on the
San José - Caldera
begins today, as heavy
machinery start moving
again with the objective
of having the road
complete by 2010.
This morning the act of
inaugurating the road
took place at Siquiares
de Alajuela.
During the Rodriguez
administration
(1998-2002) construction
of the bridges along the
route was completed and
during the Pacheco
administration
(2002-2006)
reconstruction of some
of the existing brigdes
took place.
Construction of the
completion work had been
stalled during the past
three years, as each
year the Ministerio de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
announced a start date
then followed by
machinery sitting idle
as contract disputes
kept stalling the work.
The route is important
as it will cut driving
time from San José to
the port of Caldera and
port city of Puntarenas
and Playas de Jaco and
Herradura to about half
of what it takes today.
It will also
significantly the
driving to time to the
favourite tourist
destination of Quepos
and Manuel Antonio.
Reconstruction work on
the two bridges along
the Jacó - Quepos route
are also underway.
