Drivers Without Marchamo Continue To Be Sanctioned
The Policía de Tránsito reports having stopped 875 drivers for not having their "2008 Marchamo" paid, so far this year.

According to Germán Marín, director de Tránsito, there has been a drop during the past week because many have opted not to drive their vehicles.

In addition to the ¢13.000 colones fine, drivers who have not paid their marchamo also expose their vehicles to the confiscation of the license plate.

Retrieving a license plate can be costly and time consuming. For one, the fine has to be paid and a "constancia" (confirmation of payment) has to be obtained at the Cosevi office. And, second, a visit to the traffic court office in the jurisdiction where the plate was confiscated is required.

Once the license plate has been found and the proper documentation is presented, the plate is then handed back to the driver.

Of course, if the driver has not paid the marchamo, he or she will be subject to another fine and another trip to Cosevi and court office.
