Inflation Rate Higher
That Predicted
Costa Rica closed 2007
with an inflation rate
of 10.81%, higher than
the 9.43% for 2006,
according to the
Instituto de
Estadísticas y Censos (INEC).
The inflation rate was
higher than that
predicted by the Banco
Central de Costa Rica (BCCR)
- Central Bank - which
had first predicted a
rate of 8% and then
increased it to 9%.
Adding to the higher
rate of inflation was
the cost of airfare,
gasoline, and the "casado",
a traditional Costa
Rican dish normally
served for lunch, made
up of rice, beans, meat,
vegetables and a salad.
The INEC report
indicates that of the
292 goods and services
that make up the "basic
consumer basket", 65% of
the items had a price
increase, while only 26%
showed a decreased and
9% had no variation.
