Hondurans Leaving for US By the Hour
About 25 Hondurans leave their country each hour to try to enter US national territory illegally, Honduran governmental authorities said Thursday.

Honduran Migration General Director German Espinal said only 10 percent of the ones leaving the country, reach their goal,

Espinal expressed the concern of the Honduran government for the situation, which means that nearly 523 people leave Honduras looking for a better future each day.

In statements to a local radio station, Espinal said President Manuel Zelaya administration is making efforts to pay the right attention to the most vulnerable sectors of the local population.

Espinal said most of the Honduran migrants are young people and many of them have some professional training, and assured the local authorities are convinced this trend will not change.

Official statistics showed that at least 50,000 Hondurans apply for a US visa every year, but only 10,000 of them are allowed to enter US territory legally.

More than a million Hondurans live in the US, 300,000 with residence, 80,000 protected by a temporary law and another 600,000 are illegal immigrants.
