Central Government Announces Semana Santa Closures

Central Government Announces Semana Santa Closures
Semana Santa or Easter Week is fast approaching and it is a time for vacation, especially for government employees who traditionally are given the entire week off. That changed when Oscar Arias took over the presidency in 2006.

This year, like the last two, the government has announced that central government employees will be at work and central government offices will be open on Monday and Tuesday (March 17 and 18) of Semana Santa and that, though central government offices will be closed on Wednesday, employees will use up one holiday day.

As usual, central government offices and agencies will be closed on Thursday and Friday (March 20 and 21).

Businesses, banks and retailers will have varying schedules of opening and closures for Semana Santa.

Banks have yet to announce their closing days, but are expected to be closed from Thursday to Sunday (March 17 to March 23) of Semana Santa.

Most businesses will be closed for Thursday and Friday, while some are expected to close all week.

The majority of retailers and supermarkets will be open during Semana Santa, some on holiday hours, while some may be closed for Friday.

It is best to call ahead for a business appointment or shopping.

Autonomous institutions like ICE, for instance, are free to set their own holiday hours and employee vacations, though their are expected to follow the guidelines of the central government.

Government offices, business and banks will re-open to full schedule on Monday March 24.
