Prison Authorities Ready For A Prison Break of Colombians
Authorities at the La Reforma prison are on full alert after learning that several overflights of the prison have been made over the last couple of months, readying themselves for a possible run from the prison.

The concern is heightened as the prison is home two dangerous Colombian drug traffickers, who along with a Costa Rican, specialized in "secuestros express" - a rapid hostage and ransom scheme - where their victims would be held hostage while family members paid a ransom or accomplices emptied out the victim's bank account through the use of automated tellers.

Once the ransom was paid, the victim was let free, the ordeal taking only a few hours.

Prison authorities say the flights were over a restricted area of the prison.

"We are increasing security measures including added patrols of the prison perimeter and have asked the Aviación Civil (Civil aviation authorities) to aid us in frustrating any aerial rescue effort", said Guillermo Ugalde, a security official at the La Reforma prison.

Costa Rican authorities, including the "intelligence" force have been alerted and are working together with prison officials to maintain tight security of the two Colombian prisoners, adding that in addition to the overflights of the prison, the two prisoners are suspected of having ties with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), Colombian rebel group.

Authorities aerial rescue of prisoners have been used in prisons in Guatemala and Brazil.

La Reforma prison is located in Alajuela, minutes west of the international airport.
