Nicaragua: Rightwing Parties Split
Nicaraguan rightwing parties are currently characterized by division, and contradictions on the candidates for the November municipal elections mirror such situation.

Eduardo Montealegre, until one week ago the leading liberal figure, was evicted as leader of the Liberal Alliance (ALN) and his political future is threatened by a possible jail term.

The Liberal Constitucionalist Party (PLC) of ex President Arnoldo Aleman is applying pressure to Montealegre to agree to candidacy as Managua mayor with them.

Montealegre may announce Tuesday if he will run for president backed by a PLC-alliance, media in Miami reported.

On the issue, Aleman said the party is ready to accept other choices if Montealegre declines.

Bolsa de Noticias tabloid declared that Montealegre will decline and would endorse liberal legislator Enrique Quinonez as assistant mayor.
