Colombia Fishing in
Nicaragua Waters
Colombia is granting
fishing rights in
Nicaraguan waters to
Honduran companies,
charged general Julio
Cesar Aviles, head of
the Nicaraguan Army
Command.
In the past few days,
the Nicaraguan Navy
increased patrol of
territorial waters and
captured four fishing
boats with Colombian
permits and flying
Honduran flags.
Managua authorities
accepted a ruling of the
International Court of
Justice on December 2007
that decided that
meridian 82 is not a
border.
Aviles pointed out that
waters to the east of
the meridian are closer
to Nicaragua than to
Colombia.
He added that Bogotá
tries to intimidate
Nicaragua through
spokespersons of the
chancellery and also
with the presence of
ships in the area.
Aviles concluded that
authorities of his
country should be on the
alert regarding the
Colombian strategy of
claiming those waters
that correspond to his
nation.
