Civil Marriages Triple That Of Church Weddings
The majority of Costa Ricans prefer a civil wedding over a religious one according to figures of the Registro Civil, where during 2007 a total of 24.186 marriages were registered, 18.123 of which were civil to 5.754 religious.

It appears that the altar is not seducing many couples to getting married, who, three to one, are preferring more a civil ceremony to tie the knot than the church.

As marriages are registered, so are divorces.

In 2007, 11.000 divorces were registered, a number that has been constant during the last five years. In comparison, 40 years ago only 7 divorces were registered.

Experts say the civil route is in keeping with the Tico tradition of doing things the easy and more practical way.

Once married, couples wanting a divorce must way at least three years and then it is rather quick if both parties consent to the dissolution of the marriage and are in agreement on the division of assets.
