Panama Builders Warn of Strike
Panama's single construction workers union, SUNTRACS, reactivated on Tuesday its warning of a general strike if the government does not respond to sector demands.

Saul Mendez, SUNTRACS secretary, said the Executive has not made a decision regarding wage increases, price reduction of basic products and improvements in security conditions in construction works.

He pointed out these demands would benefit those with lower income in the population.

The statements were made during the funeral of university student and worker Iromi Smith, who was shot by a policeman February 12 at a demonstration in Colon.

Since Wednesday, SUNTRACS members and university students have demonstrated about Smith's death and for answers to their demands.

More than 700 people have been arrested and the Panamanian economy reports million dollar losses.
