UN Special Reporter Visiting Guatemala
UN Special Representative for Human Rights Defenders Hina Jilani is visiting Guatemala, having meetings with government officials and members of social organizations.

During a meeting with Vice President Rafael Espada, Jilani expressed her concern for the increase of the attacks against human rights defenders and the lack of research to dismantle the groups linked to these acts.

According to Espada, it is about structural and historical problems, narrowly linked with poverty, marginalization and racism, origins which are not even in the previous government.

During 2000-2007period, 971 aggressions against leaders and organizations were registered and 50 activists were assassinated, 23 of them in the last two years, according to social groups data.

Presidential secretary for Peace and Human Rights Orlando Blanco told Prensa Latina that UN official will have private meetings during these days to obtain information and to emit her conclusions on Wednesday.

Most significant cases of humanitarian violations will be given to the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala so that this organization collaborates with investigations, she added.

Jilani also met with the Peoples Defender Sergio Morales and with representatives of social organizations to know a report on the situation in the country.
