Tamarindo Residents
Protest Increased
Development of Tall
Buildings
A group of 400 Tamarindo
area residents were out
yesterday afternoon, in
the blazing sun and
heat, to protest the
increase in development
in the Pacific coast
beach community and
surrounding areas.
The protestors' main
focus was on the
increase of building
higher than three
storeys that have been
sprouting out in all
areas of the once small,
quiet community, and
less and less of green
area development.
The protestors say that
the rise of tall
buildings in the area is
spoiling the natural
beauty and resources of
the community.
"what we are most
concerned with is the
lack of sustained
development, said
Gabriela Valenzuela, one
of the organizers of the
protest and works with
an internet website
called
www.savetamarindo.com,
whose mission is to
protect and preserve the
nature and natural
resources of Playa
Tamarindo for future
generations.
According to
savetamarindo.com, there
are 25 "skyscrapers"
built or planned for
Tamarindo, who is on the
verge of
overexploitation and the
density of buildings is
decreasing Tamarindo's
landscape and depleting
water supplies.
The protestors added
that basic services,
like garbage collection,
storage of potable water
and security, are
missing. The situation
means less than adquate
conditions for
investors, according to
Valenzuela.
The mayor of Tamarindo,
Jorge Chavarría, who was
invited to the protest,
said he recognizes the
urgent need to approve a
master development plan
for the area.
Chavarría said the the
Asociación Pro Mejoras
paid for the production
of the regulatory plan
and will be presented to
the Consejo Municipal
(municipal council) for
approval and then will
be discussed at a public
hearing, though he did
not say when the plan
will be ready and how
long the process will
take.
