Honduras: Highest AIDS
Rate in Central America
The rate of infected
people with the Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (VIH/AIDS)
in Honduras is the
highest in Central
America with more than
60 percent of all the
cases in the region.
Expert Tito Alvarado,
mentioned by Honduran
newspaper Hondudiario,
said that since 1984,
more than 26,000 people
were reported with AIDS,
and nearly 15 are coming
monthly to the School
Hospital in this
capital, of whom 5 are
children.
Alvarado said the
problem is a challenge
for the local
population, which does
not have sexual
education.
Now, AIDS cases have
increased among farmers
who come to the cities,
seek sex, get
contaminated and later
infect their respective
wives.
Alvarado said that
although the problem is
mainly in the cities, it
is also increasing in
the rural areas, just
like in other parts of
the world.
Almost 79 percent of the
cases is attributed to
heterosexual
transmission, 15 percent
to homosexual or
bisexual transmission
and 1 percent to blood
transfusions.
