Guatemala: National
Dialogue Starts this
Week
Rural development,
security and the
problems affecting the
indigenous peoples are
among the main topics
for the national
dialogue convoked by the
Guatemalan government
for Monday.
Entrepreneurs, trade
union, political
leaders, mayors,
governors, academicians
and representatives from
all churches of the
nation will take part in
the national dialogue
Monday.
"What we want is to get
a great agreement as a
nation," recently said
Guatemalan President
Alvaro Colom, who
promised a change for a
Social Democrat
government, focused on
economic growth and
fighting against
insecurity.
Fifty-one percent of the
Guatemalan population
lives under poverty, 15
percent in extreme
poverty, and
malnutrition affects 49
percent of the children
under five.
Guatemala is also one of
the most violent nations
in the region, with a
standard of 16 murders a
day.
"It is a duty to promote
permanent dialogue, and
look for a
correspondence with the
civil society to solve
the problems of the
country," said Luis
Zurita, governmental
official. |
