The Estadio Nacional de San José, located on the west end of the Sabana park, will be demolished in two months to make way for the construction of a new sports arena.

Osvaldo Pandolfo, president of the Consejo de Deportes and vice-minister of Health said that the plans for the demolition of the stadium are moving ahead and will be carried out once an environmental impact study is complete and then will take three and half months to carry out the work and remove the debris.

However, the stadium will continue to function before the demolition. Today, two soccer games are programmed, Universidad-Cartaginés (11 a. m.) and Saprissa-Carmelita (3 p. m.).

Pandolfo added that the Universidad de Costa Rica and the Federaciones de Atletismo y Tiro have been advised that to find a new home for their sports activities.

The new stadium to be built on the site will have a capacity of between 40.000 and 50.000 people with a cost of us$60 million dollars and will be financed by the governmen of China.

A new commission - Comisión gubernamental del Estadio - is being created to meet with a group of engineers, architects and technicians who will be coming to Costa Rica in March.

The commission will be made up of Costa Rican first-vicepresident, Rodrigo Arias, and coordinated by Pandolfo, will include former soccre player, Paulo Wanchope, vice-ministers of Transportes, Vivian Martín' Salud, Lideitte Carballo; Hacienda, Jenny Phillips; Medio Ambiente, Jorge Rodríguez; the president of the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias, Daniel Gallardo; and the director de Migración, Mario Zamora.

There are eight designs on the table, according to Pandolfo.

The new stadium will incorporate underground parking for 5.000 vehicles should be ready for 2010, before the close of the Arias administration.
