Belize Election in Doubt
Opposition UDP (United
Democratic Party) of
Belize questioned the
impartiality of Myrtle
Palacio, head of the
Election Department, on
Thursday when 157,000
Belizeans are voting for
the government for the
next five years.
"PDU expresses concern
and consternation over
the elections, after
learning that Myrtle
Palacio is having
private contact with
Prime Minister Said Musa
and his son Yasser Musa,
who is head of public
relations of the
governing party," a
statement said.
The text cites as
evidence a series of
e-mail messages between
the parties.
The People's United
Party aspires to a
majority in Parliament,
allowing it to a third
consecutive term.
Musa, 63, winner in the
1998 and 2003 elections,
is currently facing
several obstacles to
obtain most of the 31
seats at stake,
according to analysts.
The prime minister, once
praised for his
initiatives to
reactivate Belize's
stagnant economy, has
taken a dive in
popularity in the last
few years due to
allegations of
corruption within his
Cabinet and internal
division in the party. |
