El Salvador to Continue
Fighting Crime
The new El Salvador
police director (PNC
-National Civilian
Police) Francisco Rovira
affirmed he will
continue the work of his
predecessor Rodrigo
Avila against the
violence afflicting the
country.
Rovira, who assumed the
post yesterday, is the
fifth PNC director, and
his position will
conclude in 2009 along
with that of President
Antonio Saca.
There are plans to
reduce crime rates that
have been waiting
implementation for three
years, he told press,
adding statistics that
indicate a reduction in
crime.
Nevertheless, the
recently appointed PNC
Chief will have his
hands full with an
average 9.8 homicides
daily, a murder team
that does not give
number of cases solved
in a year and an
incredible extortion
problem.
Recently Security
Minister Rene Figueroa
specified that during
January 2008, 271
violent deaths were
reported, 70 less than
an equal period of 2007,
when 341 were
registered.
He also recalled that in
2004 and 2006, two first
years of Saca's mandate,
the number of crimes
increased from 2,933 to
3,928. |
