Honduran Congress Acts for Workers
The National Congress of Honduras is pushing a bill law project to extend the right to pay working assistance from 15 to 25 years, Honduran Congress President Roberto Micheletti informed on Wednesday.

Micheletti said the Honduran Labor Code only recognizes 15 years to pay working assistance, whether or not the worker has worked 40 years for a determined entity or employer.

The initiative will be addressed by the legislature with a tax reform bill to increase the exemption base to 8,500 dollars, which will benefit 400,000 workers in the country.

Micheletti added that the initiative will oblige employers to pay 50 percent of the working assistance when the worker voluntarily quits and, if approved by midyear, will go into force in 2008.

Political analysts do not dismiss the possibility that these measures are a political strategy by the Micheletti, who recently began campaigning with a view to the next elections.
