Tamarindo Businesses Face Closings For Not Complying With Health Regulations
Some 35 businesses in Playa Tamarindo are under the watchful eyes of the Ministerio de Salud (Health ministry) and could end up being closed like the situation at the Allegro Papagayo hotel.

The notices were given by Health officials to Tamarindo area businesses in December. So far 11 businesses have been closed, four were hotels and condominiums catering to tourists.

"The bigger hotels have health orders issued against them", said Juan Luis Sánchez, director of the Área de Salud de Santa Cruz.

The notices are for contamination of public waters and rivers, a problem of infrastructure in the area or for not having the required health permits up to date.

Earlier this week, Health officials took action against the Allegro Papagayo and began to remove guests as the hotel did not comply with the health orders to stop the contamination of local waters. In addition, area residents can now take civil action against the hotel, owned by the Occidental group of hotels.

Sánchez said that in Tamarindo Health officials issued 65 orders against the 120 establishments visited, 30 of which have already complied.

Sánchez added that Health officials will be making another inspection during the coming weeks and will close any location that has not complied with the order.

The minister of tourism, Carlos Ricardo Benavides, was not surprised at the number of businesses not in compliance with health regulations in Tamarindo and said he would support Health officials. "We are promoters of tourism and attraction for investors, but those who invest must know that we have laws and that they must be complied with", said Benavides.
