Ex Diplomat Refutes Criticisms of Nicaraguan Government
It is impossible to assess the first year of President Daniel Ortega's government without considering the 16-year heritage from neoliberal administrations, Nicaraguan analyst and ex diplomat Aldo Diaz Lacayo said.

In a lengthy article in El Nuevo Diario, Diaz Lacayo refuted criticisms of the president, and pointed out that that "the huge deficits inherited from neoliberal governments during this period" must be taken into consideration.

He noted the good performance of the Ortega government, and stressed that some self-styled left-wingers have measured his work with "the right-wing yardstick".

"Their judgments do not tally with the left wing's historic responsibility to contribute to the success of their governments," Diaz Lacayo added.

He said that Ortega is not exempt of left-wing judgments, but he must not be judged by right-wing standards.

Diaz Lacayo warned that if the left wing does not transcend the right wing's context, in which it works and develops, it would never be able support left-wing governments critically to overcome contradictions, rectify and improve.
