Tamarindo Clean Up Begins
The Municipalidad de Santa Cruz began rolling heavy machinery destroying buildings built on maritime zone lands in Playa Tamarindo. The demolitions had been coming for some time.

Municipal workers completely leveled the Hotel and Cabinas Doris which, according to municipal officials, was 99% located on maritime zone lands.

Jorge Chavarrķa, the mayor of Santa Cruz, said the objective is to recover the "bandera azul" (blue flag) status for Tamarindo beach, which it lost six months back, when it was found that waste water by a number of hotels was being dumped into the ocean.

Chavarrķa added that the municipality is investing some ¢200 million colones (us$400.000) in improving the streets of Tamarindo, as well as bettering traffic conditions.
