Escazú Invests in Security
Using cameras and police officials, the Municipalidad de Escazú wants to assure its residents security, as the area continues to be a target for break-ins and assaults.

In the majority of home invasions, criminals break-in heavily armed, terrorizing their victims and leaving with large hauls of cash and valuables.

Escazú with its posh houses and condominiums, a haven for many foreigners, has quickly seen a wave of insecurity take hold of residents.

The municipality is fighting back.

"We recruited 30 police officers and now have six security cameras which are being monitored by the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública” said Marco Segura, the mayor of Escazú.

Municipal authorities are placing their hopes on the investment in a police force to control and eradicate violence in the area.

According to mayor Segura, one of the areas that the camera is pointed is at is the central park, one of the main areas of many of the muggings. The cameras are to deter crime as the Fuerza Pública (national police force) can be dispatched immediately.

"Little by little as police officials graduate from the police academy they will be posted in the various communities", said Ronny Sánchez an official of the Fuerza Pública in Escazú.
