Zapote Fair Is A Go!
The doubt surrouding the
holding of the annual
fair in Zapote, east of
San Jose, was lifted
yesterday as the final
Ministerio de Salud
(Health ministry)
inspectors gave the fair
grounds and the redondel
"bull ring" and clean
bill of health.
The main staple of the
annual fair that begins
on Christmas Day is the
"Toros a La Tica", where
amateur bull fighters
enter the ring, taunt
the bulls and then speed
off before the bull's
horns hit the target.
Sometimes the bulls
don't miss and that is
why this year all
amateur bull fighters
have to provide proof of
purchase of a special
insurance provided by
the state insurer, INS,
before they can enter
the ring.
The thousands of
visitors can also enjoy
the rides, food and the
megabars. Some 60.000
visited the fair last
year.
This year organizers
have added a "campo
ferial" displaying an
assortment of local art
by 23 students of the
Universidad de Costa
Rica (UCR).
The event that runs into
the first week in
January is televised for
the millions that cannot
make it to Zapote.
