Cartago Hospital Tells
Gallstones Patient
The Sala Constitucional
(Constitutional Court)
has ordered the hospital
Max Peralta in Cartago
to give an elderly
patient immediate
medical attention for
her gallstones, after
the hospital had given
her an appointment for
October 2011. No, the
date is not a misprint.
Margarita Elizondo
appealed to the
constitutional court
after doctors at the
hospital diagnosed
gallstones and was given
the appointment.
The Sala IV (as the
constitutional court is
often referred to) order
named the director of
the hopsital, Victor
Navarette, as well as
the chief of surgeons,
Roxana Leiva, to provide
Elizondo treatment.
The hospital
administration said that
has abided by the court
order and admitted the
patient and are in the
process of completing
medical exams,
stabilizing the patient
and proceeding slowly
due to the high risk
giver her age.
However, this is not an
isolated case in the
country's hospitals.
A similar situation
arose at the San Rafael
de Alajuela hospital,
when a patient by the
name of Sandra Meléndez
was sent by her doctor
to the hospital urgently
for x-rays and an
ultrasound.
Meléndez, however, got
an appointment for March
22, 2010,
notwithstanding that the
request was based on an
emergency.
Meléndez was also forced
to seek the intervention
of the Sala IV to
receive prompt
treatment. |
