Panamanians Back up
Demands
PANAMA -
Panamanian social
organizations are
against the high cost of
living and for improved
salaries and may strike
for these demands,
reported sources related
to this movement.
According to a report of
the National Front for
the Defense of Economic
and Social Rights (FRENADESO)
a definition of strategy
will be made in the
coming days that may
lead to a general
strike.
On August 20 a
delegation of the
Coordinator of the Fight
for Dignity and Defense
of the Peoples will go
to the presidency of the
republic in search of
answers to their 15
demands presented last
Thursday.
Among the demands are
improvements of the
public health system,
education, attention to
pensioners and measures
to protect the
environment.
Included are requests of
attention to community
problems, a national
energy policy and
establishment of a fair
minimum salary in the
nation.
Depending on the
position of the
president there could be
a warning of a strike
that is the prior step
to a national strike for
an indefinite period of
time.
In face of this
situation the government
recently announced
temporary benefits for
public employees that
FRENADESO considers
insufficient in regards
to the economic and
social crisis.
