Nicaragua to Mark
Literacy Campaign
Anniversary
MANAGUA - Events marking
the 28th anniversary of
the Literacy Campaign
conducted by the
Sandinista Revolution in
1980 began Monday in
Nicaragua.
According to Somoto
mayor Marco Ariel Rivas
twelve departments will
be declared
illiteracy-free at a
closing ceremony to be
held in Somoto, in
northwestern Nicaragua,
on August 23.
The literacy campaign
began after the 1979
Sandinista Revolution
toppled Anastasio
Somoza's dictatorship.
From 1990 to 2006, under
the rule of three
consecutive neoliberal
government, illiteracy
climbed again above 30
percent.
With the return of
President Daniel Ortega
to power in January
2007, the Sandinista
Front is once again
striving to declare
Nicaragua illiteracy
free by 2009.
The Sandinista Youth
organization and
Nicaraguan students are
playing a key role in
the current campaign
which has been named
From (Jose) Marti to
Fidel (Castro), in
gratitude to the aid
granted by Cuba. |
