Outer Space Flights To
Be Sold In Costa Rica
Although it sounds
strange, come 2010
tickets for trips to
outer space will be sold
in Costa Rica.
Initially, weekly trips
will be offered and
depending on demand, the
frequency may be
increased.
In Central America, the
travel agency Terra
Nova, is the only agent
authorized by offer the
space fights in Costa
Rica.
The flights are being
offered by the Virgin
Galactic company who
last month unveiled the
WhiteKnightTwo, a new
class of carrier
airplane that will help
loft space tourists
beyond Earth's
atmosphere.
WhiteKnightTwo will
ferry the
not-yet-unveiled
SpaceShipTwo crafts,
six-passenger versions
of the original
SpaceShipOne, up to
50,000 feet (15,240
meters) above Earth.
The passenger ship is
then launched from the
underside of
WhiteKnightTwo to
continue its ascent to
the very edge of
space—about 65 miles
(104 kilometers) above
Earth—under its own
power. SpaceShipTwo
crafts make the return
trip to Earth unaided.
Although prices for the
flight have not been
announced, Rudy Jiménez,
vice-president of Terra
Nova, suggests that
reservations should be
made early. Terra Nova
will be accepting
deposits (amount not
set) that will guarantee
seats on the first outer
space flights.
