Costa Rica to Join
Petrocaribe
Costa Rica is speeding
up preparations to sign
the agreements required
to join Petrocaribe,
because the next summit
of that integration
mechanism is scheduled
for October or November,
according to official
sources.
Executives from
Petroleos de Venezuela
S.A. (PDVSA) and
diplomats from that
country, who gathered at
facilities of Costa
Rican state refinery,
Refinadora Costarricense
de Petroleo (RECOPE),
said the regional
summit, originally
scheduled for December,
would be held earlier,
Ministro de Ambiente y
Energia (Environment and
Energy Minister) Roberto
Dobles said.
During the meeting, held
on Monday, the two
parties agreed that
Costa Rica would sign a
bilateral agreement with
the government of
President Hugo Chavez
and a multilateral
accord with the member
countries of Petrocaribe.
They also agreed to
promote a fuel-supply
contract between RECOPE
and PDVSA, and
multilateral and
bilateral meetings will
begin soon, the minister
added.
Dobles expressed
confidence that the
three agreements will be
signed on time. "That is
why we are accelerating
the pace to be ready for
the Summit," said the
minister, quoted by the
newspaper.
Participants in the
meeting reviewed the
conditions and benefits
of Petrocaribe,
exchanged opinions on
Costa Rica's energy
situation and analyzed
aspects of cooperation
and joint projects.
The two parties are
interested in exploring
Costa Rica's oil and gas
reserves due to the
rapid exhaustion of
those resources
worldwide, said Dobles,
adding that RECOPE and
China National Petroleum
Corporation signed a
similar agreement in
2007.
The second meeting
between Venezuelans and
Costa Ricans will be
held two weeks from now
in Caracas, Dobles
announced. |
