Gasoline Price Increase
Approval Expected Monday
The Autoridad Reguladora
de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep)
confirmed yesterday that
the regulador, Fernando
Herrero, will be signing
on Monday (August 4) a
resolution for another
increase in the price of
gasoline.
Following the timeline
of the approval process,
once the regulador inks
the resolution, it must
be published in the
official government
publication, La Gaceta,
within five working
days, and prices taking
effect the day following
publication, which will
be either on August 12
or 13, just in time for
Mother's Day (August
15).
The price of a litre of
gasoline will jump to
¢731 colones for super,
¢720 for regular and
¢726 for diesel. The
current price for a
litre of super is ¢716,
regular ¢704 and deisel
¢710, wich includes a
tax of ¢173.25 a litre
for super, ¢165.75 for
regular and ¢97.5 for
diesel.
The latest round of
price increases was made
by the state refinery,
Refinadora Costarricense
de Petroleo (Recope) on
July 11. The current
prices went into effect
on July 15.

Recope is expected to
make another request
next Friday (August 8),
which adjustment,
following the Aresep
model, will not take
effect until September.
On the regulador's
agenda are other
requests for increases
in transportation: taxi
operators are looking
for a increase in fare
between 10% and 20%,
airport taxis 10%; an
increase in bus fares on
732 routes around the
country could be
announced next week as
well; and gasoline
station operators on
July 30 made a request
for an increase of ¢7.5
colones for every litre
pumped, an increase that
is a direct profit for
the station owners.
