Chinese Group In Costa
Rica Drafting Plans For
New Stadium
A team of Chinese
engineers and architects
has arrived in Costa
Rica to develop the
us$60 million dollar
national stadium
proposal. The new
stadium that is to
replace the existing "Estadio
Nacional" is China's
gift to Costa Rica, the
most generous since the
two nations began
diplomatic ties.
The Chinese
professionals arrived
last week and are
expected to stay until
the end of April.
The group will be
responsible for
outlining the plans for
the stadium after
meeting with local
professionals and
visiting notable
architectural works.
Part of the process will
include a study of the
site for the new stadium
and plans to demolish
the current stadium
located on the west side
of the Sabana park.
The new stadium is
expected to seat 45.000
and feature a soccer
field, a track, office
space and a food court
and souvnir shops.
Parking facilities will
also be part of the new
structure.
The team is expected to
submit its report to the
Chinese Ambassador to
Costa Rica, Wang
Xiaoyuan.
The new stadium will
larger than the current
Ricardo Saprissa stadium
in Tibás with a capacity
of 21.000, the largest
stadium in Costa Rica,
larger than the current
national stadium with
capacity for 18.000, is
expected to open in
2010.
