Divorce Abound in Costa Rica
According to Registro Civil (Civil Registry) 1.761 couples filed for divorced during the first two months of the year: 714 in January and 1.047 in February.

The information is only of divorces that were registered with the Registro Civil, though the actual number of marriage breakdowns could be much higher.

In 2007, the Registro Civil reported a record number of 10.926 divorces.

Monseñor José Francisco Ulloa, president of the Conferencia Episcopal of the Catholic church, said that the numbers are worrisome and hard challenge for the church.

"It appears as if marriages are disposable or 'light'", said the Monseñor.

The Monseñor assures that the Catholic church "understands and accepts with love" the divorced and is allowing communion as long as they continue single. The Catholic church dows not permit communion of persons who after a divorce, remarry by way of a civil ceremony or live common law.

The information from the Registro Civil comes days after Pope Benedicto XVI said in the Vatican that divorce is the blame for serious hard to human dignity.
