Guatemala Security Advisor Dismissed
The Guatemalan government agreed to remove controversial security advisor Victor Rivera from his post, amid criticism of his participation in parallel structures within the police forces, it was revealed Tuesday.

Rivera arrived in that country in 1996, invited by a private initiative to fight a wave of kidnappings of farmers, after having commanded private security groups in El Salvador.

The Venezuelan-born citizen, who became a naturalized Guatemalan, had been working in the Government Ministry for 13 years, leading a team of seven officers who investigated kidnappings and homicides of high impact.

His dismissal responded to a direct order by President Alvaro Colom, informed Government Minister Vinicio Gomez.

Political organizations and human rights entities accuse Rivera of having links with criminal structures within the security forces, and demand a probe into his alleged illegal actions.
