San Sebastián Prisoners
Upset Not Being Able to
Vote on the Referendum
One group that is
leading a different
fight on the question of
the TLC vote in the
upcoming referendum are
328 prisoners of the
Centro de Admisión de
San Sebastián - San
Sebastián jail.
The group has signed a
petition to be delivered
to the Tribunal Supremo
de Elecciones (TSE)
where they express their
discontent with being
excluded from the voters
list and their right to
vote on October 7.
Some of the more notable
signatures on the
petition are that of
catholic priest, Minor
Calvo Aguilar, accused
in the murder of
journalist Parmenio
Medina, and Juan Carlos
Ledezma, responsible for
the hospital Calderón
Guardia fire that killed
19.
The petition came after
a visit by TSE observer,
Alberto Cabezas
Villalobos, who visited
the jail to verify the
voting conditions on
referendum day.
According to the TSE,
only 100 of the
prisoners at the jail
will be allowed to vote
to decide the future of
the Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States.
The petition calls for
the TSE to include the
prisoners who have been
in the jail for some
time, like Calvo who is
now in his third year in
the centre, which is
sufficient time for TSE
authorities to find a
solution.
The San Sebastián is a
detention centre for
those who are waiting
trial or after being
sentenced to be
transferred to a prison.
Cabezas said that on
Monday he will be
visiting the La Reforma
prison to see if the
same situation exists.
