Intelligent Traffic
Lights A Reality,
However, Traffic Chaos To
Continue For Three More
Months
Although the
"intelligent" traffic
lights began operating
yesterday, it will be at
least three more months
before their effect can
be felt, as traffic
engineers evaluate the
system and traffic flow.
Karla González, ministra
de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT) made
the statement yesterday.
The new traffic light
system that replaces the
system used for the last
thirty years affected
for now 180
intersections in the
downtown core pretends
to improve traffic flow
along the major
arteries.
The new system began
operating when minister
González threw the
switch at the Centro de
Control de Tránsito (CCT),
in Plaza González Víquez,
activating the traffic
light control system.
However, for the most
part, traffic chaos was
the same yesterday as it
had been the day before
without the new control
system in place.
In addition to the
modern traffic lights,
the system includes
closed circuit
television (CCT) cameras
and changeable message
screens in La Uruca, La
Sabana, Guadalupe and
San Pedro to warn
drivers of traffic
conditions ahead.
Eight traffic
controllers monitor the
system on a 24 hour
basis. The controllers
will be responsible for
moving traffic, easing
congestion and giving
emergency vehicle
priority, changing the
traffic lights to green,
allowing for a faster
response time.
