Ortega Visits Costa Rica
Today
Nicaragua's president,
Daniel Ortega, is
expected in Costa Rica
today to visit with his
Costa Rican counterpart,
Oscar Arias, and to
attend mass at the
Basilica de la virgen de
Los Angeles, in Cartago.
The visit by Ortega is
very important as the
two leaders attempt to
improve their
relationship.
On the discussion table
will be items like
efforts to restart the
Bilateral Commission
project that was
suspended a decade ago,
when tensions between
the countries hit a peak
over the dispute of
navigational rights of
the San Juan river.
Relations between the
countries were further
strained over complaints
by Nicaragua of the poor
treatment of Nicaraguan
immigrants - the largest
single group of
immigrants - in Costa
Rica.
Since Ortega and Arias
took office again last
year they have met only
once, when Arias visit
Nicaragua last August.
Ortega is expected to
arrive at the Juan
Santamaría (San José)
international airport at
10:00am, where he will
be met by Arias and
other high ranking
government officials.
And unlike Arias'
visit to Nicaragua where
Ortega drove the two
around in his own
personal vehicle,
official drivers and
vehicles will be used to
move the two presidents
around the Central
Valley.
