Mudslide Closes
Interamericana Sur
Just last week the
Interamerican Sur was
re-opened after almost
two weeks of being
closed due to the damage
to the road surface by
the heavy rains, the
highway was again closed
yesterday morning.
This time, a mud slide
that occurred between
8:00am and 9:00am Sunday
morning, in the area of
El Cristo, south of San
Isidro, on mile marker
127, forced the closure
of the road as work
crews remove the mud
from the roadway.
The Policía de Tránsito
said that an "avalanche"
of mud slid onto the
roadway, more than usual
in that part of the
highway and the machines
of the Consejo Nacional
de Vialidad (Conavi) has
been working to get the
road re-opened as soon
as possible.
Drivers were forced onto
the Costanera Sur to
reach their destinations
of Golfito, Paso Canoas
and Panama, causing a
traffic jam of more than
two kilometres.
The director of Conavi,
Alejandro Molina, said
that mud slides are
common on the section of
the highway and that
passage should be
re-opened by today
(Monday) if there are no
additional mudslides. |
