Costa Rica Reaffirms Support for Taiwan:
Official
Costa Rica's acting foreign minister, Edgar
Ugalde Alvarez, has spoken out in support of
Taiwan. That's after Costa Rica voted against a
pro-Taiwan proposal at the recent World Health
Assembly meeting.
Taiwan's allies had proposed adding Taiwan's bid
for membership in the World Health Organization
to the agenda. But Costa Rica voted against the
proposal.
In an interview with Taiwan's Central News
Agency on Wednesday, Ugalde said his country was
not opposed to Taiwan's WHO bid. He said Costa
Rica had voted against the measure because it
opposed the "rearrangement of the meeting
agenda."
He also said there was no correlation between
the vote and Costa Rica's bid to become an
elected member of the United Nations Security
Council next year.
Ugalde was critical of Taiwan's failure to
explain its stance to its allies before it filed
the WHO membership application.
Nevertheless, he said Costa Rica's support for
Taiwan's WHO bid remains unchanged.
