Ortega Opposed to Food for Fuel
Nicaraguan President Daniel
Ortega coincided with the Cuban
leader Fidel Castro that to
produce ethanol on a large scale
as fuel is detrimental to the
production of food for humanity.
"As political leaders, we have
coincided in this statement,"
the Sandinista leader said
Thursday night after being
questioned on an article of the
Cuban president, in which he
warns on the danger of turning
food into fuel.
"The problem here is not if we
use ethanol or oil, but to take
into consideration that firstly
the Earth is to produce food,
and not to feed cars," stated
the Nicaraguan head of State.
According to Ortega, the main
boost given to the massive
production of bio-fuels in the
last few months, particularly by
US President George W.
Bush, is that the capitalist
world is caving into the
dictates of consumerism.
"The great battle is against the
logic imposed by the capitalist
system of accumulating capital
without taking into
consideration people suffering
from hunger," he noted.
In his Thursday s article, the
Cuban president said Bush s idea
was sinister, and would condemn
over three billion people in the
world to premature death.
Ortega considered that if fields
with sugar cane and corn are
encroached to produce fuel, "it
would be detrimental to the
human species."
